Designing-the-Straw-Hat-in-02

Throughout history, hats have been constructed of straw. By varying the width and shape of the brim, the shape and height of the crown, the same construction techniques may be used to create hats of many periods and styles, from the brimless toque, to the popular gipsy hat of 1790-1830, the oversized  Edwardian boater and the 1950’s cartwheel. You will construct a basic straw hat and learn how it can be varied to create a wide variety of historical headgear. Several trimming techniques employing vintage ribbonwork techniques, paper flower construction, feathers, beads and findings will be demonstrated, accompanied by written instructions. Materials will be provided to create several hats. Please bring small sharp scissors, pointed tweezers, and magnifiers, if needed.
